The countryside offers a wealth
of walks from the gentle to the challenging, all with unrivalled and
unspoilt scenery. We can recommend a local guide, Alan Hartwell
based in Nigüelas, who has lived in the area for many years and is an
experienced walker. Alan can offer an insight into the Sierra
Nevada and ensure you get the most from your walks.
If your interest in walking is coupled
with flora and fauna, Alan can offer tours with that in mind.
There are also other organised tours available.

Peter Gordon, based in Albunuelas, has kindly
drawn and illustrated 10 superb walks in the area (right). Even
hardened types like ourselves have learned a great deal from these
annotated maps.
They are invaluable for walking in the area and are available from
ourselves at only 3.50 euros per map.
If you prefer to explore on your own, there are
several other excellent maps available which can help guide you to the extensive
footpaths in the area. The famous GR7 passes through Nigüelas en route
to Lanjaron. It is thought to be part of the ancient pathway from
Algeciras to Athens. Take a sandwich if you intend doing the
whole walk...
There is an excellent map of the area produced by Editorial Alpina.
It covers the entire Sierra Nevada/Alpujarras, including the Valle
de Lecrin. It's a topographic tourist map and hiking
guide with details of tourist attractions, hiking & sporting
activities as well as transport information. An excellent folded
map & booklet for the Sierra Nevada, and is GPS Compatible.
It can be bought on-line at www.mapsworldwide.co.uk
- click on the map (right) for a quick link. The map costs
around £8.95 plus delivery.
The walking is fantastic and the views have to be amongst some of
the most stunning Europe.
