 Flights

...and speaking of Bargain Hunters - Jet2.com and BMIbaby.com have also entered the kamikaze pound-stretcher flight market with services to Malaga from Leeds and East Midlands.

France We have added several French properties to our holiday portfolio.  The houses are in some of the most desirable locations on the Cote d'Azure, including St. Maxim, Plan de la Tour, Port Grimaud and St. Tropez.

The Old Olive Mill - Diezma There is an excellent opportunity to invest in a property development in Diezma, a small village north-east of Granada.  The Old Olive Mill there has been bought and planning permission for up to 5 houses has been granted.

The mill hasn't been used in 40 years and comprises 2 large warehouse buildings, various outbuildings and a central courtyard.  It is accessed through an impressive gated archway.  There are pictures on the main site - just follow the links when you click here.

The village is just off the main Granada to Guadix road and is close to the skiing, walking and fishing of the Sierra Nevada.  It's probably a little over 2 hours from Malaga airport.

Skiing The Ski season at Sol Y Nieve is in full swing with great snow and weather - avoid weekends and Bank Holidays for a great day on the piste.

It's only an hour's drive from the Valle de Lecrin - take the Granada ring-road and up through the mountains on excellent roads.

The perfect skiing conditions attracts some of Europe's finest athletes...

Angling Fishing - Tackle Hire and Tuition

We have come to an arrangement with famous British match angler Bob Pickett, now of Estepona.  Bob will hire tackle and give lessons and advice to anyone wishing to fish in the area, or for those who wish to venture down to Bob's part of the world, where superb river and lake fishing is available.

Contact Bob direct through his website:

or e-mail Bob at: gofishingspain@hotmail.com

Sea Fishing

Shore-based angling can yield some surprising results - i.e. you can actually catch something other than sunstroke.  Chances are improved of course if you can get out on a boat but grey mullet, bream and bass have been caught.

Nick Hancock featured Gibraltar on his Radio 5 fishing programme where results were good, although sea conditions were poor.

El Penon - the big rock in Salobreña - is a favoured spot for mullet.  Many of the locals get into the spirit of things by trying to tempt their quarry by adopting a mullet hairstyle, known as the Tonsure of the Gods.

Freshwater Fishing

Around the greater Granada area there are numerous lakes, mainly deep dams and reservoirs.  The closest to the houses featured is, of course, the spectacular Embalse de Beznar.  Looking at an old 1979 map the reservoir is clearly over 300 feet deep, just look on the non-lake side of the dam!

Quite simply, the angling is spectacular for a number of reasons.  Firstly, it is virtually unfished - all the fish are wild and the stock appears to consist of strong, fighting common and mirror carp.  we have yet to catch anything else!  Our record is a 14lb mirror that took 30 minutes to land - we have caught as much as 250lb of crap in an afternoon and have had the odd culinary experiment using dill and olive oil to bake our catch - very pleasant too....

Several top UK anglers have also made visits to the Valley including Mark Millington (Leicester & England), Paul 'Striker' Harris and Peter 'Waring' Hopkins'.

Hopkins, speaking from his compound near Reading, says, "The fishing is as good as anywhere in Europe.  It's natural and the scenery is superb.  We usually have up to 30 pints of lager in Bar Nuevo in Lecrin to rehydrate after a hard day at the lake and this proves very economical, what with the free tapas and everything."

Praise indeed - Hopkins is also a top 'cordon bleu' chef and his special marinade for carp is given below:

Hopkin's Special Marinade for Carp

You'll need:
Fresh dill, olive oil, garlic, white wine and natural yogurt

Blend a couple of fresh sprigs of dill with 4 tbs of olive oil, 6 cloves of garlic, 4 fl oz of white wine and 4 fl oz of plain yogurt.  Marinade the filleted fish for 4 -24 hours and bake at 160 degrees for 30 minutes.  Magnifico...

In the absence of a Kenwood blender Peter uses his
initiative to produce the perfect marinade...

Riding Riding is available through our friends Lorenzo and Antonio and is bookable in Bar Salvador in Niguelas.  Overnight hacks to Lorenzo's 'cortijo' in the mountains are also available, as are lessons in the paddock.

Myself and my girlfriend (43 and very experienced) enjoyed a ride in the open country above Acequias but, on balance, preferred utilising the horses on a trip through Murchas.  This was in October when the ladies of the village were sorting the almond harvest.  They were not the only nuts cracked that day, particularly taking into  account the unyielding Spanish saddlery in use - however it was very pleasant nonetheless.

Walking Peter Gordon, based in Albunuelas, has kindly drawn and illustrated 10 superb walks in the area (right).  Even hardened types like ourselves have learned a great deal from these annotated maps.

They are invaluable for walking in the area and are available from ourselves at only 3.50 euros per map.

Golfing Opportunities Available for the Autumn, a superb house on the famous Las Ramblas championship course, near Alicante.  Having the benefit of luxurious equipment levels, a pool and 3 double bedrooms the house is ideally placed for golf, beach holidays or touring.

Group Activity Holidays Following demand from clients we have commenced a programme of short - up to a week - group activity holidays.  The menu of activities includes:
  • Car racing on the new track at Guadix
  • Riding
  • Climbing
  • Language Tuition
  • Guided Walks
  • Sailing
  • Canoeing
  • Tandem Paragliding (see below)
  • Canyoning

Available for Corporate and Private parties, we can tailor-make your stay with us.  All parties stay in the Tia Maria group of properties in Acequias.

Focus on Lanjaron Spain's answer to Malvern, Bath or Harrogate - a genuine working spa town.  Lanjaron is now much more accessible since the road was improved.  Just 12 minutes from Lecrin, Lanjaron has some really high quality and good value restaurants that are a little bit different from those in the Valley - not better but perhaps a little more sophisticated.

There is a great walk to Lanjaron from the top of Acequias - the sign says 3 hours, we say 5-and-a-half - so take plenty of water.  This route is along the GR7 footpath which links Cadiz to Athens.  We advise you take a sandwich if you are panning on doing the full journey between these two cities...

Both Alan Hartwell (Nigüelas) and Dave Parker (Johannesburg and Acequias) are GR7 experts.  Dave cleans the pool in Acequias on all spring/summer mornings - he also supports Crystal Palace so may need counseling throughout any walk...

Pinos del Valle Pinos is situated high above the Embalse de Beznar reservoir and is a lovely village with welcoming, unassuming residents.  To sit outside Bar Venecia above the 'main street' is as good as it gets.  we have a collection of really good houses to offer in Pinos for 2003, with or without pools, and some for as little as £150 a week.

If you'd like to know more, call Mark on +44 (01) 535 271184  or  07836 613970.

New Path Our last newsletter started with a road improvement piece.  we are now pleased to announce that the path from Acequias to Nigüelas has been widened using a 'Bobcat'.  This will make late-night inebriated walks back from Bar Aro much more pleasurable.  The Mayor in Nigüelas ordered the work to allow car access to the fincas opposite the village.  Bravo, Senor Mayor!

Celebrities in The Valley - A Special Report Alexei Sayle lives in Chite sometimes but takes a bit of spotting as he no longer rants and raves in a scouse accent wearing a tight fitting mohair suit.  He is actually very demure and only those with a keen eye for relaxing 'celebs' would spot him.  The typical pose featured right might help...

'A' list celeb Paul Weller was seen holidaying in Pinos del Valle with his partner and numerous children.  Frequenting Bar Venecia Paul blended into the quiet village background, although one savvy local discretely told us he was the 'hombre out of Oasis'...

We had a bit of fun chatting to Paul giving no indication that we recognised him.  Such revealing exchanges as 'Turned out nice again' and 'When's the new album out', were treated equally well - what a pleasant chap.

Other celebrities expected in the Valley include Liberace, Arthur Askey, Glenn Miller, Billie Holiday and Rock Hudson, albeit in spirit only.  Michael Barrymore has booked a house in Niguelas for next May, surprisingly specifying 'no pool'...

A very famous British female culinary celeb is due in Pinos next summer - watch this space!
